A vibrant town in Derbyshire with a history stretching back all the way to Roman times, Chesterfield is a fantastic place to live and call home.

With scenic landscapes, a friendly community atmosphere and a range of amenities including shopping centres, one of the largest outdoor markets in the country, restaurants and parks, it’s a town which blends its rich heritage with contemporary life. Let’s take a look at some of this town’s highlights…

Chesterfield’s history and heritage

When it comes to exploring the history and heritage on offer in Chesterfield and its surrounding areas, there’s many highlights to choose from. One of Chesterfield’s most iconic landmarks is its crooked spire, which sits atop The Parish Church of St. Mary and All Saints. Twisting and leaning 9 feet and 6 inches from its true centre, the spire dominates the city’s skyline. And whilst the reasons are still debated and there’s still no definitive explanation for the spire’s crooked appearance, there’s no doubt it’s an impressive and unique feature of the city!

Looking for a spot with stunning architecture, a rich history and beautiful gardens with stunning views? Look no further than Bolsover Castle. Built between 1612 and 1617 for Sir Charles Cavendish, the castle today is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and Grade I listed building. Whether it’s exploring the castle’s lavish rooms and gardens, it’s the perfect place to visit for a day of history and adventure.

Another spot well worthy of a visit is Creswell Crags. Offering a crucial link to our prehistoric past and insight into the lives of early humans, it’s the perfect blend of history and nature in one. Visitors can book a cave tour in order to view the Ice Age art still visible in the caves today, walk around the stunning limestone gorge and stop by the visitor centre featuring exhibitions which showcase the site’s archaeological significance.
