Arnold’s history and heritage
Just a short 20-minute drive from Arnold, Wollaton Hall and Country Park is a must-visit destination. This stunning Elizabethan masterpiece, built between 1580 and 1588, is one of the finest of its kind in the country. Purchased by Nottingham City Council in 1925 and opened as a museum the following year, Wollaton Hall is now home to the county's largest Natural History Museum, featuring an impressive collection of over 750,000 objects. After immersing yourself in the fascinating exhibits, step outside to enjoy 500 acres of beautiful parkland—perfect for a relaxing stroll or a day of outdoor fun.
Just a short drive from Arnold, you’ll find Nottingham Castle, located in the heart of the city. Built during the Stuart Restoration era, the castle today stands on the historic site of the original Nottingham Castle, which was first constructed in 1068. Although the original castle was demolished after the English Civil War, the current site has been carefully restored, and today, both the castle and its grounds are open to the public. With a variety of galleries and exhibitions to explore, it's the perfect place to discover Nottingham’s fascinating history while enjoying a day out.
Just a half hour’s journey by car from Arnold will see you arrive in Edwinstowe, and it’s here you’ll find Sherwood Forest. Steeped in folklore and history, the forest is well known for its connection to the legendary Robin Hood. But Robin Hood wasn’t the only notable figure connected to the forest. Standing tall between 800 and 1,100 years, the iconic Major Oak is a must-see, yet it’s far from the forest’s only highlight! There are numerous scenic walks and trails to explore, as well as a variety of seasonal events hosted throughout the year.
