Finding the perfect home in Featherstone.

"My favourite thing about our Strata home is being able to come home from work and relax, knowing that it’s ours for as long as we want it to be."
Lucy & Adam
Lucy and Adam had been renting together for two years when they decided it was time to buy a place of their own. With their sights set on a new home, they wanted to find somewhere that was not only affordable, but also close to Ackworth where Lucy grew up.
Featherstone is a small town with a strong sense of community, just five minutes’ drive from Ackworth. On the edge of Featherstone is Origin, our development of 152 two to four bedroom homes. Just over two miles from Lucy’s family in Ackworth, the location is also great for getting into Leeds - 15 miles away - and the seven-mile journey to Wakefield takes just 20 minutes by car and 30 by train.
“Origin made perfect sense to us as a place to get to and from work, and to be close to friends and family”, says Lucy. “But more than anything, we wanted a place to call our own, and we fell in love with the location, the development, and the house.”
Adam and Lucy weren't sure what to expect from the process of buying their first home together. Our team helped with financial advice and guided them every step of the way, from reserving their plot to getting hold of the keys. Moving in day eventually came in June 2016.

A perfect balance

Origin is on the edge of flourishing Featherstone, close to local amenities while backing onto farmland and open fields.
“Even though Origin is more of a town area, it is quite set back. You don’t feel like you are living in a busy environment, because it’s pretty quiet here” says Lucy. “We need to be able to get to work easily, but we also like the countryside and walking, so it’s lovely that we can walk across the fields at the back to Nostell Priory too. It’s the best of both worlds.”
A 10-minute drive takes Lucy to Fitzwilliam train station, with a direct connection to Leeds. Adam travels to work via the motorway, just 10 minutes away at Normanton. Even when it comes to shopping, there’s choice and variety. Lucy explains:
“We’ve got supermarkets within a few minutes’ walk which is great, but when we want something really special we can go to Farmer Copleys and get some really lovely local ingredients to cook with.”

An ideal home

After a visit to Origin in March 2015, the couple decided the Imola was the one for them. The three bedroom semi-detached home offered all the space they needed as soon as they moved in, as well as room to grow as a family further down the line.
“We loved the fact the Imola had a separate living room and with three bedrooms, it’s an ideal size for any future plans,” revealed Lucy.
Getting inspiration from her mum, Lucy describes their home as "more cosy and rustic than crisp and modern". The couple already had lots of belongings after renting together for two years, and it was when they started to move them in that their new home really felt like theirs. One purchase they did make was a dining table and chairs, so they could enjoy meals together without having to sit in front of the TV. Now they've been in for a while, the next step is to put a splash of colour on the walls and really start to focus on interior design.

How help made it possible

A month after that first visit to Origin in March 2015, the couple made their early bird reservation, and before they knew it they were personalising the design of their home. As their home was being built over an 18-month period, they were busy saving up ready for the move. They made good use of the help on offer from our financial advisors, and Alison, Origin’s Customer Experience Manager, was on hand to talk Adam and Lucy through the buying process and keep them up to date with progress.
“Having all that help really made a difference. I would say that if you’re worried you can’t afford it, don’t be”, says Lucy. “You’d be surprised at all the extra help you can get and how easy it is to go through the home-buying process.”
Lucy and Adam not only saved up what they could while they were living in rented accommodation, but they also opened a Help to Buy ISA, which really boosted their deposit and gave them extra peace of mind. The Help to Buy ISA scheme works by giving you extra funds: for every £200 you save, the government adds £50, making it easier for people to buy for the first time.

The right decision

Lucy and Adam are glad that they chose Origin - it might have been a small compromise on location for Lucy, but she’s still close to the family and friends she grew up with. By choosing Origin, they made their budget go further, spending less on their home and getting more space than they expected. Lucy thinks that the small change to location, moving them just five minutes down the road from their first choice, has saved them around £30,000.
“It’s also saving us money every month,” explains Lucy. “We would have been spending about £150 a month more on rent than we do on the mortgage repayments. That means we can make overpayments if we want to get everything paid off sooner!”
"Buying our first home has had a huge impact on our lives," she adds. "When we rented we could never feel settled not knowing how long we would be there. Now we have our Strata home, we can relax and enjoy our home, and make it ours."
