The weather has finally started to warm up in the UK, so it’s time to celebrate with some outdoor festivities!

Soak up the good weather and connect with friends and family by hosting the perfect garden party. Whether you’re planning a casual get-together or a more formal affair, these ideas will help you make it memorable.

Set the Scene

Creating a picturesque setting is key to a successful garden party. Here are some tips:

  • Theme: Choose a theme to set the scene and shape your decorations. Some ideas include tea party, tropical luau, or rustic picnic.
  • Lighting: If your party is hoping to go on long into the evening, think about some string lights, lanterns, and candles create a warm, inviting atmosphere as the sun sets.
  • Table Settings: If you’re going for a more formal dining experience, set the tone with some floral arrangements and place settings that fit the theme.
  • Seating: Consider where people will sit before and after the formal dining experience, or generally if it’s a more casual get-together. If you want a more relaxed vibe, opt for blankets and cushions, beanbags and other more casual seating arrangements.

Feel-good Food

Food is an essential part of any garden party, but what you serve and how will depend on the agenda of your event.

For a more relaxed vibe, opt for finger foods and bitesized portions that can be easily mixed and matched. Whereas a more formal dining setting might call for three or four courses, which can be eaten using cutlery. Also consider the weather is warm, so something light and summery will be preferred by most guests.

Casual food ideas
  • Cheese board
  • Charcuterie board
  • Anti-pasti selection
  • Tempura prawns
  • Stuffed peppers
  • Grilled meat/halloumi and vegetable skewers
  • Crisps and dips
  • Mini tarts and cakes for something sweet
  • Fresh fruit skewers
Formal dining ideas
  • Starter: Summer salad (watermelon and feta, Greek salad) or fanned melon
  • Main: Salmon on a bed of grilled vegetables, fishcakes with herby potatoes, grilled meat or halloumi kebabs on a bed of rice
  • Dessert: Refreshing fruit tart, fruit salad, lemon cheesecake, Eton mess
Drink ideas

Decide what drinks you’re going to be providing (alcoholic and soft) and how you want them to be served. Do you want to keep people topped up yourself or have a self-service area with a selection of options for people to grab their own? Ice buckets and drink dispensers can be found quite cheap in home stores and are a great way to display drinks.

Engaging Activities and Entertainment

Whether it’s just some background sound to create an atmosphere, or more interactive games and activities, it’s always good to plan for how to keep your guests entertained.
Games

Lawn games like croquet, boules, cricket or badminton are perfect for outdoor fun.

Music

Create a playlist that suits the mood of your party. Make sure you have a speaker that can be placed in an optimum position at the right volume to be heard without being overpowering for those close to it. If you have a large garden, consider multiple speakers that can sync (such as Amazon Echo Dots or Sonos) to create a seamless sound experience.

Photo Booth

Create a backdrop with balloons, flowers and greenery, and provide props for fun photos.

Weather-Proofing Your Party

As much as we wish it wasn’t, the UK weather can be unpredictable and unseasonable. So it’s always best to have a weather-proof plan to make sure the party can still go ahead even if the weather has other plans!

Gazebo

A gazebo is easy to install and there are various sizes and styles to choose from depending on the scale of your event. You can purchase one yourself for not too much, or for a more professional set up with less hassle, you could hire one! Hire companies often provide extras like lighting, heaters and more to create a full indoor experience.

Parasols and canopies

If the weather gets really warm, it’s always nice to have a shaded area for people to seek shade. Parasols and canopies are a great way to create designated shaded areas for guests relax in if the sun gets too much.

Blankets and Heat

If you’re planning on being out late into the evening, it’s always nice to have blankets available for your guests to cosy up and carry on enjoying the festivities. Also consider if a patio heater is needed (depending on the time of year, the temperature can drop quite a lot when the sun goes down). Or alternatively, a fire pit or chiminea could create a cosy glow for people to gather round and offer the option to toast marshmallows too!

With thoughtful planning and attention to detail, your garden party can be a fun and memorable event for all your guests.

From setting the scene with beautiful decor to ensuring everyone is well-fed and entertained, these ideas will help you create an unforgettable outdoor celebration. Enjoy the process of bringing your vision to life and watching your guests enjoy a magical garden experience.
