20/20 Autumn / Winter Trends: Scandi in Colour

With the change in season just around the corner we had many questions about what trends we can expect to see over the coming months. So, we sat down with Karl, the Lead Creative, at DAPA, to find out exactly what those trends are and how we can style them in our own homes.

So far this year we’ve seen Scandi interiors really come into their own. The biggest spring/summer trend was stripped back, Scandinavian design. People have filled their homes with neutral tones and textures in the form of white on white rooms, rattan furniture or macramé wall hangings. This relaxed, paired back trend has now paved the way for the next seasonal trend, colour in Scandi.

Just like fashion, interior design can evolve from the most unexpected places, in turn treating us to some of the most beautiful pieces of furniture, art and crockery. This year, the autumn/winter trends are heavily inspired by manufacturing and industrial materials. Think hand crafted, artists with splattered aprons, production lines filled with corrugated cardboard or building sites packed with breeze blocks and stone.

Collate all of those beautiful materials, textures and colours and you can expect to see more beautifully textured vases, carefully crafted pieces of artwork and lots of terracotta, olive green and plum shades creeping into your every day homeware.

So, how do you incorporate these trends into your home?

The beauty of these trends is that you can be as subtle or as bold as you like. If you instantly fall in love with an olive green shade, don’t be afraid to paint a feature wall in your master bedroom or the ceiling in your guest room (it is the fifth wall after all!). Or if you want something a little less garish, why not start small? Bring the shapes, textures and colours in through artisan accessories or crockery, bed linen and throws.

You’ll find these colours were heavily featured in the 70’s too. The patterns and fabrics used in that era are very much making a comeback. Think about inserting your lounge or snug area with some 70’s style cushions or a rug.  The beauty in these trends is that they go perfectly with the existing, paired back Scandi look. Adding a terracotta throw or some olive green cushions to your bed will instantly warm up a room making it the perfect, cosy space for you to relax in the cooler months.
