Named after the River Don, Doncaster is one of the UK’s newest cities nestled in the heart of South Yorkshire. But don’t let the ‘new city’ badge fool you, this is a city with centuries old history and heritage dating all the way back to the time of the Romans! Today, you’ll find a city which offers a vibrant living environment, with a dynamic and diverse population to go alongside it. But it’s not just a busy and thriving city centre that Doncaster has to offer either! Charming market towns and villages each with their own unique character and charm surround the city, with plenty of wildlife-rich and green spaces to be explored too. So, let’s take a look at some of this city’s highlights and see why it’s such a fantastic place to call home.

Doncaster’s history and heritage

With a history stretching back to 71AD, traces of Doncaster’s history can be found all around the city. Built to the designs of famous architect George Gilbert Scott, Doncaster Minster located in the heart of the city is well worth a visit. A grade I listed building, the internal space showcases the highest standard of craftsmanship, from the paintings on the wall to the stained glass windows.

Doncaster is also home to Cusworth Hall Museum & Park (often referred to as the jewel of Doncaster) and Brodsworth Hall and Gardens. Cusworth Hall sits within acres of historic parkland, which are open to the public every day of the year. With walking trails available, the parkland is ideal for family days out, picnics and dog walks. The museum is open four days each week, and the collections reflect the daily lives of the people living in Doncaster from the 18th century through to the present day. Brodsworth Hall, built in the 1860s, is one of the most complete surviving examples of a Victorian country house. From grand reception rooms to servant quarters, the hall is home to over 30 rooms which tell the stories of the people who once lived and worked in the house. And the Victorian gardens have been restored to their former glory and are the perfect spot for a stroll and taking in the fresh air.

And last but certainly not least in Doncaster’s rich and varied history is Conisbrough Castle. Built in the 11th century following the Norman Conquest, what remains of the castle today remains one of South Yorkshire’s most striking landmarks.
