Situated in the heart of the Spen Valley, Cleckheaton is a charming town in West Yorkshire.

A former mill town with a rich industrial history, today the town still forms a part of the Heavy Woollen District along with Batley, Heckmondwike, Ossett and Dewsbury. With plenty of shops and markets, the town is a hub of activity with all the modern amenities needed for day to day life. But it’s not just a town with shops, restaurants and pubs, its location in God’s Own Country means there’s easy access through to the stunning countryside of Yorkshire. So, if you’re thinking of making this delightful town your next home, make sure to take a look at some of this town’s highlights.

Cleckheaton's history and heritage

Set within the picturesque setting of Wilton Park, Bagshaw Museum is well worth a visit and is only a short drive from Cleckheaton. The museum is home to a collection of artefacts from many parts of the world spanning many different periods of history. However, it’s not just history from around the world that’s to be found in the museum. Built in 1875, the building itself was once a Victorian mansion built for a local woollen manufacturer named George Sheard. Many of the reception rooms have retained their period features and remain largely unaltered since it was first built, making the house a fine example (and hidden gem!) of high Victorian decor.

Just another short drive from Cleckheaton is Oakwell Hall. A visit to the house and grounds offers visitors a rare insight into what life was like in a post-English civil war household, thanks to the fact that the decor and interior of the house have remained largely unchanged in over 400 years. And the house sits within 100 acres of award winning country park, making it the perfect spot to enjoy a dog walk and spend time in nature along one of the ground’s nature trails.

And let’s not forget that thanks to Cleckheaton’s industrial history, a walk through the town will reveal much of its original and impressive Victorian architecture!
