A day out in Spennymoor


Spennymoor is a popular town located just a short distance from Country Durham. Home to a wide selection of shops, quaint coffee shops, country style pubs and even the well loved Spennymoor Town Football stadium, there is something to make everyone feel at home. Brunch at The Grind

To start the day right and fuel up for a day of exploring, it is important to grab some yummy food from The Grind. This café bar is the place to be in Spennymoor, in the day this hot spot is the perfect place to grab some delicious brunch. From a stack of American pancakes to the classic eggs benedict or even steak and eggs, there is something to satisfy whatever you are craving. (Did we mention that this place also offers the most Instagram-worthy food in the local area…the real reason we love brunch so much!) 

In the evening this well loved café turns into a thriving bar with extravagant cocktails, live music and even a live DJ to get the party going. What isn’t there to love about the best of both worlds?

A visit to Bob Abley Art Gallery

After a delicious bit of brunch, it is time to get exploring and take a short two minute walk over to the Bob Abley Art Gallery located on the Highstreet.

This art gallery spans over a variety of different sized rooms and is home to a wide selection of art pieces ranging in size and price, making it the perfect spot for any art enthusiasts or creative minds. 

 The gallery is run by a group of passionate volunteers who will happily guide you through each room and tell you more about each piece that is on offer. The main room found within the gallery is called The Cornish Room and houses a selection of original pieces from the famous artist Norman Cornish who was originally from Spennymoor himself. You can even find an original video piece of Norman talking about the local area of Spennymoor and how it influenced his artistic style.

Victoria Jubilee Park

A morning spent surrounded by art and culture calls for one thing, some fresh air and a nice relaxing walk in the local park. 

Victoria Jubilee Park is an absolute hot spot for the local community and is overflowing with events, sports and activities to do throughout the whole year. During the summer months, the park hosts regular concerts within the band stand including larger events such as ‘Party In The Park’ and their annual ‘Family Fun Day’ which is a very popular event with the locals. Thriving converts aside, this park also has a wide variety of activities to keep the whole family active and entertained throughout the whole day. From tennis courts, basketball courts, football pitches and even a crazy golf course, this is the perfect place to spend a relaxing afternoon with your family and friends.

The Black Horse Inn & Pitmans Grill

It is time to head over to the local pub ‘The Black Horse & Pitmans Grill’ which is located on for some comfort food. This cosy inn is the perfect place to wind down for the evening and is even described as ‘A gem of a pub in the heart of the community’ by the locals. 

The pub and grill has a comforting and traditional feel to it with a selection of traditional food on offer such as fish and chips, a selection of pies and of course, a traditional roast dinner on a Sunday. 

During the warmer months, there is a spacious beer garden on offer which is the perfect place to enjoy the sunshine and longer evenings with a cold refreshing drink. 

Not only does this quaint pub offer a selection of comforting food, a wide variety of wines, beers and gins, they also regularly hold events such as live viewings of the football, live music performances and so much more. What isn’t there to love?

Whitworth Hall & Deer Park Estate

After a day of exploring, it is time to head over to Whitworth Hall Estate to put our feet up and relax in one of their luxurious hotel rooms. 

Whitworth Hall is a stunning hotel located within the heart of the countryside, just a short 8 minute drive away from the centre of Spennymoor. This breathtaking mansion hotel and wedding venue is based in the centre of the 73 acre Whitworth estate, which you can freely roam around during your stay. As you explore the local grounds of the estate, don’t be surprised if you bump into some of the resident Fallow Deer who also call the estate home, these are friendly and you can even hand feed these furry friends during your travels. Alongside the local deer, this park is also home to a beautiful walled garden, a vast ornamental lake and there is also two play areas to keep the little ones entertained during your visit.
