Preparing for your move

As you get closer to moving in day, it’s time to start making some preparations so everything runs smoothly. You might want to put together a schedule or checklist – our suggestions might help.

4 weeks before

You may need to organise time off work to move into your new home, so arrange this with your employer if you haven’t already. When you move into one of our homes, you will be invited to a home demonstration with your Home Builder, which will take place on a weekday.

Four weeks before moving in day is also when you will need to book removal vans and decide how to pack up your belongings. If you need a recommendation, the British Association of Removers or the National Guild of Removers and Storers has a list of approved members in your local area. Alternatively, you could ask a friend or family member for suggestions.

If you owe any money on your utilities accounts – such as your gas and electricity – it’s time to settle your final bill. Ask for a closing statement if you haven’t already received one.

Tell your dentist and doctor you’re moving, so they can arrange for your records to be sent to your new surgery. You can only do this if you already know who you will be registered with.

2 weeks before

The Royal Mail needs to know you’re moving so they can redirect your post. To do this, give the names and dates of birth for everyone whose mail is to be redirected. They will also want the address and postcode of where you’re moving from and to.

These companies will also need your new address:
  • Financial providers – anyone you have a credit card, savings account, current account, pension or loan with.
  • Your employer.
  • HMRC and your local council tax department.
  • DVLA
  • Any subscriptions you have with magazines, breakdown services, sports clubs etc.

1 week before

A week before you move, confirm all the details with your removal company.
Having everything packed in clearly labelled boxes will make it easier for when you move in. Some essentials you’re likely to need straight away are:
  • A change of clothes for everyone.
  • Bathroom essentials such as towels, toilet tissue and toiletries.
  • Kitchenware like pots and pans, washing up liquid and a tea towel.
