Find out how one couple swapped city life for the country

We swapped city for country and never looked back
Sammy & Matt
For four years, Sammy and her husband Matt were renting a two bedroom flat in the centre of Leeds. They were in the heart of the action – something they both loved – but they also knew that it came at a price. What they gained in city living lifestyle, they lost in space and comfort. And then there was the rent…

They began to think about moving to somewhere nearby – out of town but well-connected, closer to the countryside and with extra space. Sammy noticed our new homes at Persona, opposite her workplace in Colton 6 miles outside of Leeds, just about the time she and Matt were thinking of making a move.

Now with four bedrooms and a lifestyle they love, they’re better off as well, spending less on mortgage repayments than they were on city-centre rent.

“…we could really make it ours. I could really imagine us there.”

“On our first visit we looked around the Tivoli show home and we just fell in love with the Strata style,” says Sammy. “It was lovely and contemporary and there were options to customise the design that meant we could really make it ours. I could imagine us there.” Looking at the different home types on the development, they eventually chose the four bedroom Modena, buying off plan.

“It was a bit of a leap because we didn’t see the Modena until ours was built! But looking at the plans we just loved all that space, and the layout was really well designed. The rooms are all big and open and we could just imagine having people to stay, and proper space for storage and it felt right. It was perfect, everything we wanted.”

Sammy says she was bit sceptical about new build homes at first. “I just wondered if it might look too new, that it wouldn’t have the right ‘feel’. But when we saw the show home it wasn’t like that – I realised we could make it look like ours straight away. And it didn’t feel too modern – the exposed wooden beams in the kitchen are one of my favourite features because they look traditional.”

“It’s changed the way we live really – we loved being in Leeds but it’s a different quality of life here, and this is perfect for us. We still go into the city, but it’s lovely to know you can leave, and come home.”

The move has also bought a change of lifestyle with it. “In Leeds we couldn’t put anyone up, they had to stay in hotels if they wanted to visit. Now we have these lovely big bedrooms and really spacious kitchen and lounge so we can have people here – it makes it so homely to have friends and family visit.”

And there’s a permanent addition too. Matt had really wanted a dog, and the move meant that Kali could join them. “Not only do we have the space at home, but we have a garden for her to run around, and we have these lovely walks on the doorstep. My favourite place to go is the gardens at Temple Newsam.”

Sammy has embraced the process of furnishing and designing her home, sharing her progress through Instagram - @love4housenumber3.
