The kids’ imaginations have been running wild, coming up with some extraordinary ideas for their dream homes.
We asked Mike Barnett, Head of Design, to weigh in on some of the weird and wonderful ideas…
Freddy, aged 4, was among the many children we asked that would love to have a house made of chocolate bricks. Is this possible?
Mike: “We did briefly try using chocolate and other edible substances as building materials when the brick shortage hit, but to be honest it ended up costing us dearly as half the homes we built had bite marks… the builders get hungry when they’re working hard.”
Joking aside, we might not be able to build homes from chocolate, but a room made of chocolate can and has, been done. In 2013, a Russian artist created a whole lounge (furniture and all) from Belgian chocolate! You can see it here.
MIND READING TECHNOLOGY
Callum, aged 11, would like a home that could read minds. Is that something that could eventually become a reality?
Mike: “Well Callum’s not as far off having his dream home come to life. We’re currently testing Wondrwall, the world’s leading smart home technology. No need to programme it using apps, Wondrwall learns how you live and adapts to it, so it basically reads your mind…”
Pretty cool, right?
A HOME BUILT ON A FOOTBALL STADIUM
Brooke, aged 10, is a keen sports fan and would love to live in a football stadium.
Mike: “Now that one we’ve done! Our Amber community in Hull was built on the site of the old Boothferry Park Stadium, which was home to Hull City FC for 56 years before the club moved to their new home, the KC Stadium. “A lot of the residents there are Hull City fans and it was their dream come true to actually be able to live in a house built on the old ground.”
“Arsenal Football Club also did something cool when they moved from their old stadium at Highbury to the new Emirates Stadium. The old stands were converted into apartments complete with balconies facing inward, looking over the pitch. The pitch was turned into communal gardens so that the residents could walk on the famous pitch.”
